What Does Motorcycle Insurance Actually Cover?

Ask ten riders what their policy covers and most will say "liability," then stop talking. That's usually because liability is the only piece they were required to buy, so it's the only piece anyone explained to them. A real motorcycle policy is built from several separate pieces, and which ones you have changes what actually happens after an accident.

The core pieces

  • Liability. Pays for the other person's medical bills and property damage when you're at fault. This is what your state requires, and it's the only piece that protects someone else, not you.
  • Collision. Pays to repair or replace your bike after a crash, regardless of who caused it.
  • Comprehensive. Covers your bike for everything that isn't a collision: theft, fire, vandalism, hitting a deer, weather damage.
  • Medical payments / personal injury protection. Covers your own medical bills after an accident, regardless of fault.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Covers you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. (See Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage for Riders.)

What most standard policies leave out

  • Your riding gear. Helmets, jackets, boots, and gloves are often not covered at all unless you add specific gear coverage.
  • Aftermarket parts and accessories. Custom exhausts, chrome, saddlebags, and other upgrades usually aren't covered under a standard policy's valuation of the bike. (See Motorcycle Gear and Custom Parts Coverage.)
  • Roadside assistance and trip interruption. Not automatic. Worth asking about directly if you ride any real distance from home.

Why it's worth building this out, not just meeting the minimum

The state minimum exists to protect other people from you, not to protect you from anything. If you'd be in real financial trouble losing your bike, your gear, or facing your own medical bills, that's the part liability alone will never touch.
