Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage for Riders

Here's the scenario that catches riders off guard: someone runs a red light, hits you, and it's entirely their fault, but they're driving without insurance, or without enough of it to cover what actually happened to you. Your liability coverage doesn't help here, because you didn't cause the accident. This is exactly what uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is built for, and it matters more on two wheels than it does in a car.

Why this hits riders harder

When a car gets hit by an uninsured driver, the damage is often "just" a repair bill. When a motorcycle gets hit, the rider is frequently the one who absorbs the impact directly, meaning real medical bills, lost income during recovery, and sometimes long-term injury, not just a damaged vehicle. The financial exposure from being hit by someone with no insurance is simply bigger for a rider than for a driver in a car.

What it actually covers

  • Uninsured motorist coverage (UM). Steps in when the at-fault driver has no insurance at all, covering your medical bills and sometimes your bike's damage, depending on your policy.
  • Underinsured motorist coverage (UIM). Covers the gap when the at-fault driver has insurance, but not enough to cover the full cost of what happened to you.

Both typically also cover hit-and-run accidents, where there's no driver to even file a claim against.

Why it's easy to skip, and why that's a mistake

Because it doesn't feel like it protects you from your own actions, it's the coverage riders most often decline to save a few dollars a month. But you have zero control over whether the other driver carries insurance. This coverage is one of the few pieces on the policy that exists entirely because of someone else's decision, not yours.

What to check on your current policy

If you're not sure whether you have this coverage, or what your limits are, that's worth a direct question, not an assumption. Limits that match your liability coverage are a reasonable starting point for most riders.
