Motorcycle Gear and Custom Parts Coverage
Riders spend real money on gear and customization, a good helmet, a real riding jacket, saddlebags, a better exhaust, chrome, and most of them assume it's all covered under the same policy that covers the bike. Usually, it isn't.
Why your gear probably isn't covered
A standard motorcycle policy covers the motorcycle itself, valued as it came from the factory. Your helmet, jacket, boots, and gloves aren't part of the bike, they're personal property, and most policies simply don't include them unless you add specific coverage for it. If your gear is stolen along with the bike, or damaged in a crash, a standard policy often pays nothing toward replacing it.
Why custom parts are their own separate problem
Aftermarket exhausts, custom paint, upgraded suspension, saddlebags, and other accessories usually aren't included in the bike's insured value either. If your bike is totaled, the insurer typically pays out based on the bike's stock value, not what you actually put into it. Some riders find this out the hard way, after putting several thousand dollars into customization that the payout never reflected.
How to actually cover both
- Gear coverage (sometimes called "apparel" or "safety gear" coverage) — a separate line item that reimburses your riding gear if it's stolen or damaged, usually up to a set limit.
- Custom parts and equipment coverage — extends your bike's insured value to include aftermarket parts and accessories, so a total loss payout actually reflects what you've put into the bike, not just what it rolled off the factory floor with.
Both are typically inexpensive add-ons compared to what they protect, but neither is automatic. If you've customized your bike or you ride with real gear, ask specifically, don't assume it's already included.
What to do before you ask for a quote
Take a few photos of your gear and any custom work, and keep receipts if you have them. It makes setting the right coverage limit straightforward instead of a guess.
