Liability vs. Full Coverage for Motorcycles
This is the first real decision every rider makes, usually without realizing it's a decision at all. Liability-only is cheaper and it's what most states require. Full coverage costs more and actually protects the bike you're riding. Neither one is automatically right, it depends on what you're actually protecting.
What liability-only actually does
Liability-only pays for the other person: their medical bills, their car, their property, when you're found at fault. It does not pay one dollar toward your own bike, no matter how the accident happened. If you total your motorcycle and you're at fault, liability-only means you're paying to replace it yourself.
What full coverage adds
Full coverage means liability plus collision and comprehensive: your bike is covered if you crash it, and it's covered against theft, fire, weather, and hitting an animal, regardless of fault. (See What Does Motorcycle Insurance Actually Cover? for the full breakdown of each piece.)
How to actually decide
- What's the bike worth? An older bike worth a few thousand dollars might not justify full coverage's added cost. A newer or higher-value bike almost always does.
- Could you replace it out of pocket? If losing the bike tomorrow would be a real financial hit, that's the case for full coverage, plain and simple.
- Is it financed? If you have a loan on the bike, most lenders require full coverage anyway, so this one isn't optional.
- How much do you ride, and where? More miles and more exposure tilt the math toward full coverage.
The mistake we see most
Riders drop to liability-only to save money right after they finish paying off the bike, the exact moment they have the most to lose if something happens to it. If the bike is paid off and worth protecting, that's not the moment to cut coverage, it's the moment you're finally covering an asset that's fully yours.
